What is Indian Head Massage?

It is an effective therapy that has evolved from traditional techniques practised in India over a thousand years. The treatment involves massage to the upper back, shoulders, upper arms, neck, face and scalp. Indian Head Massage is only now starting to gain popularity in the West.

This massage works on significant areas of the body, especially the neck and shoulder areas where stress affects major muscle groups such as the trapezius muscles. Tensions are eased and fibrous knots and nodules melt away. The efficiency of the circulatory and lymphatic systems improves, toxins disperse from tense muscles, flexibility and fluidity of movement is restored.

The History of Indian Head Massage.

Indian Head Massage has its origins in the ancient system of medicine known as Ayurveda (circa 1800bc)which was developed in the himalayian region of the Indian subcontinent by holy / wise men (Rishis). The underlying philosophy is that health results from harmony within ones whole self.

They promoted living a holistic way of life incorporating exercise , diet , meditation and massage with aromatic herbal oils to create harmony in a persons life. Massage is an acknowledged method of cleansing and maintaining the health of the body and understand to be extremely beneficial practise for acgiving joy and inspiration.

What an Indian Head Massage treatment involves.

An Indian Head Massage generally starts with the client sitting in a comfortable chair for the duration of the massage but It can be also incorpated into a Reiki session where you are lying down on a massage table. The client should wear a camisole or vest top, but they will be given a towel as well to wrap around.

Treatment begins with a shoulder and neck massage to relax the muscles , often this is  where knots, stiffness and tension are stored. The head is then worked with the scalp being squeezed, rubbed, gently tapped and prodded. The hair is briskly tussled and gently combed by the fingers.

Pressure points are gently worked on and the ears are tugged and pressed. The face is also given attention by working with acupressure points to help relieve any sinus pressure, stimulate the circulation and increase alertness. As the massage proceeds the client will relax and breath more deeply and can release supressed emotions and negative energy, making room for more positive feelings. The client is advidsed after a treatment  to drink plenty of water and take it easier and not to drink alcohol for 24 hours, reduce caffeine intake and try to cut down on smoking.
